For a lot of people, Daddy Dearest was the first Egbertcest piece they’ve ever crossed paths with. For many more, it’s the ONLY Egbertcest fic or art they’ve seen/read.
It’s bad. It’s so bad. The dynamic and storytelling and backpedaling is bad and even worse are the jokes that came out of it. John loves his Daddy. John mewling like a kitten. Don’t tense up boy you’ll snap my fingers in your bootyhole.
Okay, yes. No one is denying that the fic was awful, deserving of ridicule. Egbertcest shippers AGREE with you. Daddy Dearest was a bad thing to happen to the fandom.
But it was not the only bad thing. Egbertcest was not the only ship to have a bad fanfiction written for it. What about the one where John rips Dave’s eyes out FOR LOVE~*~*~? What about the Sollux/Karkat one where (if I remember right) Sollux blinds Karkat, kills Terezi, and carves his name into KK’s face FOR LOVE~*~*~*? What about the stockpile of awful Stridercest fanfictions about Bro abusing Dave in whatever way?
There are bad fics and bad art for everything. But you can’t judge all works based on one bad thing. I hate Daddy Dearest. I hate the jokes and I hate that people still think they are funny. But I still love Egbertcest, just like a lot of people still love Stridercest, a lot of people love Dave/Rose and John/Jade.
Basically, all your reasoning for why it’s okay to shame this particular ship is bullshit. There’s no reason for it. There’s no reason to scream WHYYYYYYYYYY when Dad/John appears on Tumblr. There’s no reason to still be making John loves his Daddy jokes. It’s an old fic. We are trying to move past it and make good things.
You should move on too.
